Pobřeží Bulharska svými dlouhými písečnými plážemi plynule navázalo na pláže Rumunské a člověku putujícímu po moři by ani nepřišlo, že přeplul z jedné země do druhé, nebýt občasné vlajky, povlávající ve větru na pobřeží a policie, sledující zpovzdálí každé mé máchnutí. Nahoře na pískovcové stěně, která už několik hodin kopíruje moře a pláže, popojíždí zelený džíp, sem tam se zastaví, otevřou se dveře, vystoupí dvě postavy a dalekohledem sondují pohyb na moři. Jsem v klidu a těším se na další kontakt s nimi. Pluji ve vzdálenosti několika set metrů od břehu, na pláži je pohyb, nudisti, rekreanti, rybáři, bárky, stany, chatky. Blíží se podvečer, budu mít ještě nějaké úkoly na souši, sehnat vodu, uvařit, postavit stan, zabezpečit jej proti případné noční bouřce. Stočím příď ke břehu, a když loďku nadzvednou válce příbojových vln, pádlem a kormidlem udržuji směr, než se ve velké rychlosti vyplavíme na pláž. Pustím pádlo a ve vteřině, než přijede další vlna, přeběhne po palubě a zaleje kokpit, vysoukám se z lodi ven, udělám dva rychlé skoky k přídi, chytnu kajak za držadlo a vytáhnout jej ven z příboje. Svleču vestu, zástěru, přehodím je přes loď a nechám sušit na slunci.
Peter je zavalitý Němec s brýlemi, pod nimiž se skrývají drobné dobrácké oči, člověk, jehož pohybový aparát už je nastaven na úsporný režim a jehož tvář je jakoby zaobalena do jakési zvláštní neviditelné hmoty, o které jste však přesvědčeni, že tam je. Když tak sedíte vedle něj, jeho pohled pluje nad hladinou moře do dálek a vy stejně máte pocit, jakoby se díval na vás. Z nějakého důvodu se vedle něj cítíte skvěle. Myslíte si, že to hlavní se v jeho životě již událo a teď je čas odpočívat, užívat si a vychutnávat. Sedí zabořen v plastové židli pod věží pobřežní stráže, podobné té, na které za velkou louží kdysi vysedával Mič Bjukenen a Pamela Anderson vystavovala své vnady. Peter tady zastává totéž povolání, je záchranář na téhle části pláže. Požádám jej o radu, kde tady můžu sehnat pitnou vodu. Tady jsou jen chatky, povídá, nejbližší vesnice je pět kilometrů tímhle směrem. Když půjdeš po pláži, za půlhodinu tam budeš. Nebo počkej, zavolá na dceru ležící o kousek dál na horké pláži, Sáro, přines prosím Tě z auta ty dvě láhve vody. Otočí se zpátky na mě, večer odjíždíme do města, tobě se budou hodit.
Do západu slunce brouzdám po pláži, prsty se přehrabuji ve stovkách vyplavených lastur, otáčím zajímavé kameny všech barev a tvarů, vdechuji jemně slanou a svěží vůni vánku, proudícího sem ze zpěněných vln tam někde uprostřed Černého moře. O kus dál pod rybářskou osadou kope šlachovitý chlapík rýčem do pláže, kousek od vody. Chvíli jej po očku sleduji a pak se vydám za ním. Skopává metrový písečný schod, nános od příboje, těžký mokrý písek hází dolů a udusává. Za hodinu připlují z moře bárky, říká, přes ten schod bychom je nahoru nedostali. Chvíli se na něj dívám, hlavou mi proletí nával momentů z mého zaměstnání a zaměstnání různých lidí, od svých přátel až po lidi, které jsem někdy potkal na cestách. Zaleje mě ohromné teplo nad poznáním, jak je ten Svět a život každého z nás odlišný a jedinečný. Střídáme se u toho ohromně těžkého rýče, kopeme, odhazujeme, udusáváme. Před setměním se z jihu vyloupne první bárka, sedmimetrová dřevěná loď s čtyřčlennou posádkou na palubě. Jak se loď blíží ke břehu, napětí houstne. Příď se zařízne do písku a vlny přicházející v metrových válcích od moře, pohazují se zádí, jako když splašený kůň vykopává zadníma nohama. Na moment si vzpomenu, jak jsme před lety s klukama mnohokrát zachraňovali našeho třítunového Kajmana z Dunajských mělčin, byla to obdobně náročná šichta. Chlapi seskáčou po pás do vody, do železného oka na přídi vsune něčí ruka ohromný hák, vzadu na břehu zaskřípá naviják, lano se napne jako tětiva a bárka se pomalu, po kouscích sune přes v písku nakladené dřevěné kulatiny z vody ven. Po třech párech rukou z obou stran ji podpírají a tlačí, chodidla se boří do vody a pak po kotníky do písku.
Notnou chvílí pak čekáme na návrat druhé lodi. Přenášíme kulatiny a klademe je po metru za sebe znovu k vodě, do místa předpokládaného vylodění. Z vytažené bárky je vyproštěn hák s lanem a celé jednoduché soustrojí je nataženo zpět k moři, aby bylo připraveno na další, tohoto dne poslední práci. Na nebi putují velké tmavé naducané mračna, zakrývají měsíc a dělají noc ještě temnější, než ve skutečnosti je. Na horizontu na moři najednou probleskne světlo, jednou, dvakrát, opakovaně. Ve tmě těžko odhadnout, jak je loď vzdálena od břehu. Darius, ten z rybářů, jehož bylo během vytažení první bárky nejvíce slyšet, vyndá z kapsy malou svítilnu a pošle po hladině několik záblesků směrem k připlouvající posádce. Krátká komunikace pomocí světla. Zanedlouho jdou v hukotu příboje rozpoznat vzdálené hlasy a chvíli na to přistane loď kýlem v mělčině. Znovu se rozbíhá hemžení rukou, nohou, kakofonie hlasů, mlácení vln do zádi, praskot kulatin pod lodí, skřípění navijáku. Jakmile se vše uklidní, emoce vychladnou, vzduch se utiší a i moře jakoby bylo s koncem dne svých hrátek nasyceno, teď jen tak tiše šumí a spokojeně si v příboji pobublává. Rozloučím se s rybáři a šourám se pískem ke svému stanu, pln nových dojmů a radosti z téhle chvíle. Jako by se nic nestalo.
